Announced August 27th, during a press conference held by The Source magazine in New York City, SRC/Universal Recording artist David Banner received three nominations for this year’s upcoming Source Awards being held in Miami, Florida on October 13th. David Banner and his SRC debut Mississippi: The Album have been nominated for “Break Through Artist of the Year”, “Single of the Year – Collabo” for “Like a Pimp” featuring Lil Flip, and “Live Performer of the Year.”

Banner has already had a stellar year with the spring release of Mississippi: The Album. It debuted at #1 on Soundscan’s “R&B chart,” #2 on Billboards’ “Rap Chart” and #9 on Billboards “Top 200 Albums Chart” and spawned the smash hit single “Like a Pimp,” featuring Lil Flip. The video for the single stayed in heavy rotation on both BET and MTV2, as well as garnered significant spins on radio stations throughout the country.

Toted as “a friggin’ genius” by Spin magazine and “a leader of the New South” by Vibe magazine, Banner has achieved large amounts of critical acclaim from underground to mainstream outlets. In fact, the Chicago Tribune wrote, “Banner shines throughout Mississippi: The Album. It’s the type of high-quality, well rounded, sonically diverse rap album that is becoming more and more rare.” This year’s Source Awards nominations confirm Banner’s talent, determination and contribution not only to Mississippi and southern rap, but to hip hop in general.

Be on the look out for the second single from Mississippi: The Album, an open letter to God “Cadillac on 22’s.” “I chose “Cadillac on 22’s” as my second single because I wanted to show my diversity as an artist and give people a glimpse of my spiritual side,” Banner states. On “Cadillac on 22’s” Banner rhymes, “God I know that we pimp, God I know that we wrong, God I know I should talk about more in all of my songs, I know theses kids are listening, I’m know I’m here for a mission, but it’s so hard to get ’em when 22 rims are glistening”

The video for “Cadillac on 22’s” has just hit the airwaves and is already getting a notable amount of rotation on BET. Banner is also set to release the official chopped and screwed version of his SRC debut with Mississippi: The Album Chopped and Screwed on September 9th. And yes, the hulk of hip hop is hard at work on his second original album, MTA 2 (Mississippi: The Album 2) to be released December 3rd, 2003.

In addition to MC’ing, Banner’s production work can be found on Nappy Roots current album Wooden Leather where he produced “Nappy Holiday,” and “War & Peace”. He also produced “Rubber Band Man” off the Trap Muzik album for TI and “You Want War” for Busta Rhymes upcoming album. And he’s also done work on Petey Pablo’s upcoming album. Furthermore, Banner is readying the film Mississippi: The Movie for a winter release.
