Irv Skips Court?

Posted By on August 22, 2003

As we reported couple days ago, Irv Gotti was arrested backstage at a R Kelly concert for possessing of ecstasy. Well, it looks like Gotti failed to appear in court on the drug charges.

Gotti was supposed to appear in Alameda County Court Tuesday at 2 p.m. to answer the misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. But both he and his lawyer failed to show. A bench warrant was not issued for his arrest Tuesday, but Gotti’s absence caused his $20,000 bail to be forfeited to a bondsman.

The label boss, who’s real name is Irving Lorenzo, was arrested on Friday night backstage at an R. Kelly concert at the Network Associates Coliseum for possessing a single tablet of MDMA, or ecstasy, and a few Viagra pills.

Gotti’s lawyer for the case, Dennis Roberts, said, that Gotti didn’t have to show up to court for a simple misdemeanor and that his own absence could be explained by “a simple miscommunication” with the district attorney on the case, Russ Giuntini.

Roberts explained that there was confusion as to the date, time and place of the hearing, and that he’s since straightened out the matter. The case has been put back on the calendar for Monday, when Roberts is expected to answer the charge for Gotti, and the bondsman has been called off.

According to Giuntini, Gotti would most likely be remanded to a court-mandated drug-diversion program.
