During a White House press conference, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney fielded questions concerning Jay-Z’s Open Letter. Shortly after Jay-Z released “Open Letter” the White House was already pushed into responding to lyrics in the song that mentioned the White House and President Obama.
In Open Letter Jay-Z speaks of President Obama in one of his lyrics.
“Obama said ‘chill, you gonna get me impeached’/ But you don’t need this shit anyway/ Chill with me on the beach.”
It was during a press conference at the White House yesterday that a reporter quoted those lyrics and questioned whether or not the President had been in contact with the Brooklyn rapper. The press secretary went on to stress that the Treasury Department handles those type of issues and that the President has not had any contact with Jay-Z.
“I guess nothing rhymes with ‘treasury.’ Because Treasury offers and gives licenses for travel as you know and the White House has nothing to do with it,” Carney explained. “I am absolutely saying that the White House and the President on down had nothing to do with anybody’s travel to Cuba. That is something that Treasury handles.”
All of this stems from a trip to Havana, Cuba that was approved by the Treasury Department as an educational and cultural trip, but the Treasury Department insists that when they approved the trip they were not aware that Beyonce and Jay-Z would be going. The US does not like notable names traveling to certain countries because the trips are normally used by the opposing country to embarrass the US.
