Jay-Z to buy an NBA Team?

Posted By on November 20, 2003

So now we have an idea of what direction Jay-Z might be thinking of going in for his post-rap career: basketball.

No, J-Hova — who supposedly retired from his recording career last week with the release of his ninth LP, The Black Album — isn’t going to lace up the new LeBron James Air Zooms and hit the hardwood. But the rapper is reportedly making a pitch for the New Jersey Nets NBA basketball franchise, according to ESPN.

Jay has hired the New York investment company Andrew, Alexander, Wise & Co. to look into what it would take to bid on the Nets. The Nets are owned by the parent company YankeeNets, which put the team up for sale before the current season. Four bids have already been placed, each in the neighborhood of $250 million.

Meanwhile, Jay-Z will hit the hardwood at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday for his farewell headlining show in New York. According to sources close to the show, possibly joining Jay onstage that night are Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Jermaine Dupri and a singer Jay tried to recruit for his Black Album song “Justify My Thug” — Madonna.

Spokespeople for Jay-Z, the investment company and YankeeNets have all refused to comment.
