The Grammy Committee Considered Leaving Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Out of Rap Category

Posted By on January 23, 2014

It’s no secret Hip Hop sensation Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had a hell of a year in 2013. Countless hits, sold out shows galore, and of course, their fair share of haters. An anonymous Grammy rap committee member has issued a few interesting statements regarding the duo’s nominations. Apparently, the committee was torn on even including them in the rap category.

The anonymous member stated that, due to the mainstream success of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, most didn’t see them fitting into the rap category.

“It’s not that they don’t think he’s a rapper,” the person said of the rap committee’s decision. “It’s just that when you’re trying to protect categories and someone has become popular, it should be judged as much…Where does their music exist? Who are their fans?”

A few months back, Macklemore spoke on the uproar that would take place if he did win Best Rap Album.

“We’re up against Kendrick, who made a phenomenal album,” Macklemore said. “If we win a Grammy for Best Rap Album, hip-hop is going to be heated.”

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are up for a total of seven Grammys, including Album Of The Year.

So if a rapper becomes successful on “mainstream” radio and within the “pop” culture, they are no longer rap? Rap has because one of the most successful genres in music, it is mainstream and popular (hence POP). So typical of the rap community to hate on someone too successful…
