A Manhattan judge ruled yesterday (June 5) that prosecutors could not charge Busta Rhymes with possession of a weapon, after a machete was found in his SUV following an arrest on an assault charge.
Busta (born Trevor Smith) was arrested in August 2006 on charges of assaulting a man who reportedly spat on his car. During the arrest, authorities would find a machete in the rear seat pocket of his SUV.
According to New York Newsday, Busta stood silently during the brief hearing before Criminal Court Judge Shawndya Simpson rejected the prosecutions request for the additional charge against the Brooklyn bred rapper.
Busta would then tell the courtroom sketch artists, "I love it when you make me look good," before leaving the courthouse.
Earlier last month Busta rejected a deal that would have sent him to jail for a year for two assault chares and a drunken driving charge. The deal would have also required Busta to attend an alcohol treatment program and pay a $1,500 fine.
The rapper is due back in court on December 11.
