P. Diddy is expanding his repertoire from fashion, music and business to make his stage debut this spring in Broadway's revival of the Lorraine Hansberry drama A Raisin in the Sun.
With only a small acting background including a role in the critically-acclaimed blockbuster, Monster's Ball, Diddy will reinvent the role of 'Walter Lee', who was originally played by award-winning actor Sidney Poitier. Walter Lee, a starring character who longs to escape his limited circumstances to be in big business, is torn between his mother's wishes and his own dreams.
"Most big stars won't audition at all, but Sean was exactly the opposite," said producer David Binder to the New York Daily News. "He had to jump through a lot of hoops. He auditioned for the director, the casting director and the agent for the [Hansberry] estate. Everybody was incredibly impressed by his professionalism and preparation."
Raisin in the Sun premiered in 1959. It was the first Broadway play written, directed and starring African-Americans and ran 530 performances. A film 1961 version followed, as did a later 1991 TV movie. |
