Bad Boy leaves Arista Records

Sunday, 19 May 2002 |   Written by Dave   PDF Print E-mail Post a Comment
Hip-hop impresario Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and his Bad Boy Records label are bidding goodbye to Arista Records with the release of his new album, "We Invented the Remix." But Combs doesn't plan to be homeless for long "We're in negotiations on another situation," Combs said in an interview this week. "Our deal was up, and we had a great run with Arista, and we appreciate everything. But it's time for us to get bigger, man. It's time for us to go to the next level."

Combs would not reveal what companies are in the running to hook up with Bad Boy, but he insisted that reports about him having to leave artists such as Faith Evans, Carl Thomas and Dream at Arista are "false." Evans and Thomas both appear on "Remix."

"As far as the particulars, I'm gonna announce all that when we have everything signed and sealed," he said.

Combs and Bad Boy are departing Arista on a winning note, however. "I Need a Girl (Part One)," a collaboration with Usher and Loon released as the first single from "We Invented the Remix," reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album also contains the track "Unfoolish," a remix of singer Ashanti's recent chart-topper "Foolish."

Other artists appearing on the album include Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, Lil' Kim and Snoop Dogg. But Combs views it mostly as a celebration of remixing as a craft and as an effective marketing tool to bring fresh life to existing songs.

"I think remixes help to combine different forms of music, different genres that wouldn't normally be together," said Combs, who also has remixed tracks for rock acts such as Limp Bizkit, Smashing Pumpkins, Sting and Tool.

"(Remixes) appeal to fans who like pop music, R&B music, hip-hop music. They may have been introduced to the beauty of these different bands through these remixes when they might not have listened to them otherwise."
