As we previously reported, many people predicted that Mariah Carey would sell more then 500,00 copies of her E=MC2 album the first week. Today the numbers are in and she couldn't live up to expectations, selling only 463,000 copies according to Nielson SoundScan. Even though she didn't break the 500k mark, it was her biggest selling week she's ever had, not to mention the highest first week sales of the year in the music industry.

With the new album sales, Mariah tied Madonna and Janet Jackson for the second place for the most number 1 debuting albums for women, second only to Barbra Streisand who has eight. Mariah already beat out Elvis Presley for the the most number 1 hit records.

Leona Lewis, the British star, also made history as she had the first debut album by a solo British-born artist to enter the chart at the top spot, also being the 2nd female British artist to have a chart-topping album, the other being Olivia Newton-John.
