In a political climate and economic environment that has seen politicians and their constituents draw distinctive and definitive lines in the sand and stand firmly thereby, some found it quite shocking that Rapper “Big Boi” revealed that He did not vote for President Obama in this past election. At a time when entertainers and artist such as Jay-Z, Common, and Young Jeezy openly and passionately supported President Obama, there were independent thinkers that made their statement by not voting mainstream.
Big Boi wanted to make clear that he doesn’t have anything personal against the President, but he feels that he just can’t agree with the way either main stream party is moving in the whole of things.
During an interview with Huff Post Live, the rapper recalled an instance in which a lady presumptuously made a snide remark concerning President Obama’s victory the day after the election.
“Well, I was, you know, leaving to go out of town, and it was a lady — a Caucasian lady — and she was like, ‘Oh yeah, congratulations on y’all win last night,’ you know, with like an attitude,” And, you know, just to let her know I was on my P’s and Q’s, I was like, ‘I don’t know what you talkin’ bout, I voted for Gary Johnson.’ And she looked shocked to even know that I knew there were other candidates on the ballot, you know what I’m saying? So, you can’t judge a book by its cover.”
In revealing this, if nothing else, the point was made that the Hip Hop community has within it independent thinkers that can be a part of a movement without following blindly those philosophies that may be diametrically opposed to their personal beliefs. Big Boi goes on to explain that there were simply some philosophical differences between he and the President on what he considered to be major issues. He says that he would like to see more policies that positively impact the whole instead of a select few.
