LL Cool J showed the Hip Hop Community that even rappers need love and in celebration of Valentine’s Day, the day dedicated to the human’s most nebulous emotion, several of Hip Hop’s finest shared their favorite love songs.
In an interview with MTV, G-Unit General 50 Cent shared that when he entered the Hip Hop game, the word “Love” was reserved for LL Cool J. “The word ‘love’ was reserved for LL Cool J when I fell in love with Hip Hop,” There were a number of others that shared Fif’s sentiments, as Uncle L’s “I Need Love” was mentioned severals times. Fabolous was also in agreement.
“That was one of the first heartfelt Rap songs,” he said, paying homage to the track.
Method Man’s “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need” which features Mary J. Blige (It also garnered a Grammy), received a great deal of praise as well.
“It captured everything,” Juelz Santana explained. “It captured the love but it [also] captured the hood. The beat, everything, records like that, those records don’t just happen every day.”
Talib Kweli presented an abstract view on the topic, saying that he believes that all emcees strive to make love songs in some form.
“I think all musicians want to make love songs,” said Kweli. “That’s what we all strive for.”
