Philip Morris, the manufacturers of Marlboro Cigarettes has officially taken offense to the packing of Stones Throw Records Packaging for the latest project of their artist Jonwayne.
According to reports, Stones Throw Records has acknowledged that they have received an official cease and desist letter from the attorneys of one of the most powerful companies in the county. Stones Throw, which is known for their creativity in designing cover art, produced a cassette package that looked like a Marlboro Cigarette pack.
The Philip Morris Company has responded in a direct and uncompromising way. According to Stones Throw, they have received an official letter from Arnold & Porter LLP, a law firm that is representing Philip Morris on the matter. The letter calls for the record label to cease and desist from all use and distribution of the image in question. The record label produced scanned copies of the letter.
According to the letter, Philip Morris asserts that Stones Throw is guilty of copyright infringement and insists that all such infringements stop immediately.
At this particular point Stones Throw has not indicated how they plan to respond to the letter. One thing is certain, if they don’t cease & desist, they will be a “stones throw” away from a major law suit.
