With a new time, comes a new medium. Just like the slow but steady change from cassette’s to compact discs, the new music medium is gradually changing from physical cd's to digital downloads. Nielson SoundScan reported today that over a billion digital tracks were sold in 2008, up over 28% from 2007.
Of the 1,001,000,000 digital tracks sold in the United States this year, Leona Lewis lead all sales with her "Bleeding Love" track taking home the highest-selling song title with over 3.3 million downloads. Flo Rida and his "Low" single comes in 3rd while Lil Wayne takes home 6th with "Lollipop."
Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" will most likely lead the physical album sales this year but Coldplay and their "Viva La Vida" LP will most likely take home the digital title. Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through The Static" album and the soundtrack to "Juno" will take the 2nd and 3rd spots while Weezy rounds out the top four.
