Recently in an interview with Blender Magazine, Alicia Keys made some statements that are causing some controversy. Keys said that the U.S. government created gangsta rap, saying they did it as a "ploy to convince black people to kill each other." Residents of Alicia Keys old neighborhood are split on whether they agree. Shawn Gillis, a 21 year-old rapper and poet said that Keys' claims belittle rap groups like NWA and emcees like Snoop Dogg's contributions saying "I don't think it was the government," Gillis said. "The government didn't make them who they were."
A 65-year-old resident, William Fox, agreed with Keys in a way saying "The government has proven in the past to be untrustworthy," continuing "I don't want to say they're behind it, but they're somewhat behind it." Alicia Keys also stated that the government perpetuated the bi-coastal hip-hop feud that snuffed the lives of rap greats Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. She said they did this "to stop another great black leader from existing."
