Jason Johnson, a rap artist known as Camoflauge, was fatally shot Monday while walking with his toddler son outside his studio in midtown Savannah, authorities said.
Police were called to the scene outside Pure Pain Records about 4:30 p.m. after reports that shots were fired. They found Johnson suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Johnson, 21, died later at Memorial Health University Medical Center. His son was not hurt.
No arrests have been made. Police did not have any suspects, officials said.
Johnson, who grew up in public housing, hit the record charts with songs about Savannahs poverty and violence. His latest album, Keeping It Real, was released in August.
His songs included Cut Friends ( F*** Firends ) and Laying My Stunt Down.
The rapper suffered minor injuries in a shooting in September, after which he moved to the suburbs in neighboring Bryan County.
Johnson had a police record that included drug violations and a murder charge. He spent three months in the Chatham County Jail in 2000 after being accused of shooting Kenneth Boo Capers, but he was not indicted.
