David Banner’s SRC/Universal Records debut Mississippi: The Album has a successful first week at radio and retail selling over 75,000 units and soaring to the top of SoundScan music charts! — #1 according to SoundScan’s R& B Chart!; #2 on the Rap Chart!; and #9 on the Top 200 Albums Chart!
The video clip to Banner’s lead single “Like A Pimp” which also features Houston rapper Lil’ Flip, has remained one of the Top 5 “Most Played” videos at BET for over two weeks now. A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Banner sets out to paint a musical picture of his home state. From the title track, “Mississippi,” to “Cadillac on 22s,” Banner delves deep into the culture and social ills of the state. “I named my album ‘Mississippi’ for a couple of reasons,” Banner notes. “Firstly it would force people to say the name Mississippi, therefore they would have to remember us and not continue to count us out and second, in our society Mississippi seems to be a synonymous for the people that are down and out, the underdogs.” Banner says he hopes the album will prompt people to think differently about Mississippi.
As the first release on Steve Rifkind’s Street Record Corporation (SRC), a joint venture with Universal Records, Mississippi – The Album is poised to become one of the biggest albums of 2003.
