Before there was Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, or Jeezy; before there was Pac and Biggie, there was the Golden Age of Hip Hop! Rappers like Rakim, Biz Markie, MC Lyte, and so many more that defined an era that saw Hip Hop place its indelible mark on the music world. You cannot discuss this era in Hip Hop without mentioning the incomparable Slick Rick of the famed “Get Fresh Crew”.
The past few years have not necessarily been that kind to the Slick Rick, with a prolonged battle with immigration, as they attempted to deport him to his native England, and being booed during a halftime appearance at a Brooklyn Nets game and the Barklays Center earlier this season, but this past weekend, Brooklyn was a lot more warm and kind to the Ruler. Slick Rick was joined by family and friends at the Brooklyn Bowl in Brooklyn, NY to celebrate his birthday. The event was very festive and to top it off there was a video shown in which some of Slick Rick’s cohorts and contemporaries of the Golden Era offered Happy Birthday Wishes and reminisced about the good old days. Some of those that appeared in the video were Raekwon, Talib Kweli, Special Ed, Biz Markie, Chubb Rock, MC Lyte, Sway Calloway, and more.
Slick Rick visibly moved by the turn out and the love that he received. “Last night was an incredible night for me as well as the Golden Era of Hip Hop. It is always great to see and perform for my fans, but to share my birthday with them at the Brooklyn Bowl was out of this world,” said the Ruler.
Rick admitted that the video with well wishes and shout outs from his peers was the highlight of the night.
The rapper actually performed live before a sold out crowd. He was accompanied by a full band and a D.J. He moved the crowed with all of his classics.
