In a move that shocked an entire culture last year, legendary rapper Snoop Dogg announced that he was joining the Rastafari movement and that he had changed his name to Snoop Lion. Now, according to a recent report by TMZ it seems that members of the Rastafari movement are, not at all, happy with the highly publicized religious conversion of Snoop.
Bunny Wailer, an original member of Bob Marley & The Wailers, as well as a practicing Rastafarian, criticized the rapper after viewing Reincarnated , a documentary that documents the process of Snoops conversion. Wailer is concerned that Snoop is using the tenets of Rastafarianism for the sake of personal gain.
When Wailer was questioned as to the specific nature of his concerns he said, “[His conversion is] outright fraudulent use of [the] Rastafari Community’s personalities and symbolism. [Snoop has failed to meet the] contractual, moral and verbal commitments [of the Rastafarian religion],”
It appears that Bunny Wailer is not the only member of the Rastafarian community that is less than happy with the rappers defection to the Rasta culture. A seven page statement was recently released by The Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council that said, “Smoking weed and loving Bob Marley and reggae music is not what defines the Rastafari Indigenous Culture!” The Council has threatened to sue Snoop if he does not cease from using the name Snoop Lion, make a public apology, and pay fees to the organization for moral and financial support.
