There was a point and time when being called a nerd was an insult, but according to Talib Kweli, he considers himself and other elite rappers to be rap nerds.
“I most definitely know Biggie was a nerd,” Talib told Fuse. “His life situation led him to a street life, but he was able to put words together like that. He was a street nerd…Jay-Z is hustle nerd. Nas is Queensbridge nerd. Everybody’s a nerd in their own way.”
Kweli, who feels that he has been pigeonholed as a conscientious rapper, revealed in the title of his latest installment, “Prisoner of Conscious”, believes that each of these rappers have their own unique attributes that make them nerds, but he definitely makes the connection with Jay-Z.
Talib has a longstanding connection with Jay-Z as he was infamously mentioned on Jay-Z’s Black Album joint “Moment of Clarity”, when Jigga spit, “If skills sold, truth be told, I’d probably be lyrically Talib Kweli.” Jay also appeared on Talib’s “Get By”.
Talib Kweli continued, “I think there’s a top-tier, upper echelon of lyricism,” Kweli said. “Jay-Z’s in it and I’m in it, too…He said he would do what I do. If the world was different, he would do what I do. If the world was different, maybe I would do what he did…I think I got in respect what he got in wealth.”
