Recently released from incarceration for federal weapon charges, Atlanta rapper T.I. is already planning his next moves in the music industry, from new mixtapes to new albums and has already released his first single, appropriately titled “I’m Back“. While many thought he would emerge from his one year jail sentence, of which he served only seven months, with lots of new material, he explains why the creative constraints of jail limited him.
“I’m happy to be home, I learned a lot, grew a lot and now I think it’s time to put all that to good use. I didn’t write too much, people might thought I was doing a lot of writing but I didn’t write that much, you know. I didn’t get a lot of time to. It was a lot of activity around me so I wasn’t really motivated to create. I just want to continue to maintain the level of success I’ve been fortunate to do over and over again over the years.”
DJ Drama confirmed his involvement on the mixtape project, titled “Fuck a Mixtape“, on twitter, while posting a trailer for it as well. While other artist collabs have not been confirmed, rumors have hit the net that Lil Wayne, who is currently incarcerated, will have an appearance on the mixtape. Others have speculated that new Atlanta rapper B.O.B. will also make an appearance. However, T.I. himself said the mixtape is only about eighty percent complete, leaving the door open for other guest artists to jump on.
Fans waiting for a studio album won’t have to wait much longer either, as T.I. confirmed that he is working on a new album via his official website, and released the title, “King Uncaged” to be released August 24 on Grand Hustle / Atlantic.
When talking about the album previously, he wouldn’t reveal the name, but did give insight into what to expect:
“It’s a lot of things that needed to be spoken on, you know. In my absence, it was a lot of things that went down, a lot of matters that needed to be addressed and this was the greatest platform for me to do it…Y’all already know, once again it’s on. Like we always do this time.”
TI also compared it to his last album, the multi-platinum paper trail, “Well, this album is different in many ways. I think that Paper Trail was a lot more about thoughts and this is more about feelings. And this is significantly more aggressive, at this point in the production. Who knows, I could do ten love songs tomorrow and change the direction but as of right now, it’s going hard. It’s going hard like classic T.I.”
Others who have been working with him also confirm the level of dedication he has put into the new album, with singer and producer The Dream saying “Tip is in a zone, man. “He’s in one of those things. But me just being a lyric guy, what makessongs, I think, hits is when it comes from the heart and you really are saying something you mean. And you can feel it through the passion. Every record he played me, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I could just feel it. It wasn’t about judging it. It wasn’t about, ‘Is this a single or is this that?’ It was just, ‘Wow, where have you been? Where’d you go?’ It was just elevated, and he’s elevated. Right now, he’s rapping like he’s in space. Not a place we don’t know — it’s in the same area — but his vibe is just wider now.”
