In an industry in which unmitigated arrogance seems to be a prerequisite for the collective, it is refreshing to hear an up and coming artist speak of being humbled and inspired by a peer. This is the case with Top Dawg Entertainment’s Ab-Soul.
While being interviewed recently, Ab-Soul spoke about how hearing Kendrick Lamar rap for the first time humbled then inspired him. The talent of artists like Lamar and Ab-Soul has made TDE easily one of the most sought after collectives in the industry right now. In the interview Ab-Soul disusses the relationship that he has with “Lamar” and how it has positively influenced his career.
During a recent interview with Hot 97’s Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg, the rapper opened up as he recalled listening to Kendrick Lamar rap for the first time and how it totally humbled him. He said that the experience also heavily inspired him.
“When I first heard K. Dot, I thought that he…could potentially be one of the best ever, first time I heard him,” he recalled. “We were so young at the time and you know, we’re talking about pride – I’m a rapper too, and I aspire to do well, so listening to him for the first time really kind of humbled me. [He] let me know, like, ‘Okay, I’m not the only one that’s really serious about my craft.’ He’s continued to be that consistently throughout our entire relationship. I’m still heavily inspired by him all the time.”
